Girard-Perregaux are known for their exclusive and especially intricate watches and now they have announced a limited edition watch only available for Greater China. While that alone might be exclusive enough for most avid collectors, they have also announced that only 50 of these watches will be made and available for purchase. While this might not appeal to everyone the engineering of this watch alone should be recognised and talked about.
This watch features the Calibre GP08600-0001 automatic movement with a power reserve of 48 hours which is manufactured by Girard-Perregaux themselves and displays more than 200 individual components. The movement besides serving the obvious purpose of powering the watch it also serves the visual purpose as the movement is completely visible from the front and acts as the dial of the watch. There is a micro-rotor between the 10 and 11 o’clock position that is in perfect symmetry with the barrel between the 1 and 2 o’clock position. The second bridge on the watch at the 6 o’clock position holds the balance spring in place and all of this is completely visible from the front.
The case is 40mm in diameter and is made out of pink gold, which the colour wonderfully plays in the light and constantly shifts between different shades. The case back and dial is made out of sapphire crystal and is only water resistant to 30 metres. The strap is a black alligator leather strap with a triple-folding buckle made out of pink gold. From the back of the watch you can see some more details on the movement of the watch as well as the model number and “Limited Edition of 50” engraved in the back surrounding the exhibition case back.
While it could be frustrating for a lot of collectors that these watches are made even more exclusive not only by number but also the region they are released in, everyone can definitely admire the amount of work and precision that has gone into the making of this watch. Girard-Perregaux watches may not be to everyone’s taste but the work they do should definitely be admired especially from a manufacturing point of view. As mentioned previously this watch is only available in China and only 50 watches will be made and available for HK$280,000 or roughly about US$36,000.
