Some more great news as part of Seiko’s 140th Anniversary is a new Grand Seiko that is limited to only 140 pieces. As usual with Grand Seiko’s the dial is comparable to some of the finest Swiss watch manufacturers or even better than them. It is unfortunate that it is only limited to 140 pieces as to even get a chance to view the watch will be very slim. However, lets discuss what is special about this watch and also that beautiful dial.

When looking at the dial the first thing anyone will notice is that black wavy design as it is to represent the dark and light tones of wood grain. Another minor detail on the watch would be the small eight-pointed star on the dial. This is to show that it is a “Special Dial” that has precious materials/metals for the dial, hands and/or hour markers. This is not to be confused with the five-pointed star as this is to show that the watch has an accuracy of 5 seconds per year. As in this case the watch case is crafted from platinum and the indices, the letters “GS” and the frame around the date window, and the buckle is made out of solid gold, so therefore it has the eight-pointed star on the dial to signify that it is a special dial.

It would be a shame to talk about the watch without mentioning what the inspiration of this watch, as according to Grand Seiko it embodies the spirit of Kintaro Hattori. Kintaro Hattori founded Seiko in 1881 and led the company until his death in 1934. His famous lesson taught to his colleagues was “Don’t run but always keep going,” and this watch is to signify his spirit and vision. The movement of the watch is the very special Calibre 9SA5 movement that has an accuracy of +5 to -3 seconds a day with a power reserve of 80 hours. This movement can be fully admired through the exhibition caseback on the watch where you can see all the details of that amazing movement.

While it is sad news that it is only limited to 140 pieces worldwide, chances of seeing this watch in person will be a very rare occurrence if that. However, anyone who gets the chance to either own or see this watch should consider themselves to be quite lucky. The watch will be released through Grand Seiko Boutiques and select Grand Seiko retailers worldwide in July 2021 at a price of $59,000.
